SALAAM BOMBAY! is the story of Krishna, a 10-year-old boy who comes to Bombay dreaming of making 500 rupees to take home to his mother in the village. Once in the city, he is immediately surrounded by its madness and cacophony: policemen, madmen, middlemen, the trading of drugs and flesh, impossible movie fantasies. And everywhere there are children like him, surviving and succumbing to the appetite of the city. The film, although carefully scripted, is a marriage of narrative and documentary. The ‘actors’ are all children from the streets and the entire film is shot in working-class neighbourhoods, railway platforms and the red-light areas of Bombay. While celebrating the spirit of survival in Bombay’s street-children, SALAAM BOMBAY! is also a story of a world that denies its children the luxury of childhood, a world which is no longer innocent.

He took full advantage, scoring more points in his first five NBA starts than any other player in the modern era, and created a legitimate public frenzy in the process. Prior to this now-legendary run, Lin had faced adversity in his career at every turn. Despite leading Palo Alto High to a shock California State prep title, he received no scholarship offers from any major university. Then despite a standout collegiate career at Harvard, he was not drafted by any NBA team.

Along the way, they start to see that their dreams can become reality and they find peace and happiness which had been missing from their lives. Set against the colorfully garish, seedy, and exotic backdrop of Bombay’s “C” movie business of the 1980’s when the underbelly of Bollywood churned out sleazy social dramas, campy horror films and erotic bandit pictures with titles like “Dolly Darling” and “Lady James Bond”, MISS LOVELY tells the tale of two brothers immersed in this universe who eventually turn on each other in a sordid tale of betrayal, doomed love, jealousy and revenge. MISS LOVELY is a tribute to the Bollywood underground, an audacious cinema with wild cinemascope compositions, lurid art direction, rollicking background soundtracks, and gut-wrenching melodrama.

CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL tracks the triumphant rise of Hollywood’s most prolific writer-director producer, the true “godfather” of independent filmmaking. While known for working fast—some of his films were made in two days—and wallowing in the cult movie world of monsters, bad special effects, schlocky acting, and plentiful nudity, Corman is also a respected rebel of cinema. He dealt with hot-button social topics like race and feminism. He created his own production and distribution company, tagging it “America’s Biggest Independent.” And he taught the next generation of film greats, including Scorsese, Demme, Coppola, Cameron, even Ron Howard. From Corman’s first feature in 1955 to the set of his new film, DINOSHARK, this entertaining documentary has all the blood and guts of Corman’s lurid and fascinating career, with essential insights from contemporaries and students. Paul Schrader’s visually stunning, collage-like portrait of acclaimed Japanese author and playwright Yukio Mishima (played by Ken Ogata) investigates the inner turmoil and contradictions of a man who attempted an impossible harmony between self, art, and society. Taking place on Mishima’s last day, when he famously committed public seppuku, the film is punctuated by extended flashbacks to the writer’s life as well as by gloriously stylized evocations of his fictional works. With its rich cinematography by John Bailey, exquisite sets and costumes by Eiko Ishioka, and unforgettable, highly influential score by Philip Glass, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters is a tribute to its subject and a bold, investigative work of art in its own right.
