A French man, psychoanalyst and photographer who lived in Japan, investigates the daily lives of people in the region devastated on 11th March 2011 and after. At that time, the entire world has seen the images of people in a state of confusion and distress of a huge disaster. They were dignified and aghast. “At the moment, I said to myself: Japan is going to be submerged by water, I thought: Japan is disappearing, it is over, the mobile phones were not working, nor television, nor electricity, nor water.” (From an interview in the film). On 11th March 2011, the whole world saw the people in northeast Japan damaged by an earthquake and by an abnormal tsunami. What happened to all these people? What do they tell us? How do they deal with what happened, and with the trauma? This is the subject of the film “La vie après Fukushima” (The life after Fukushima). This film is about the life after what happened on that day.

Noseland is a humorous ode to the world of classical music and some of its star musicians. Although it is a feature length documentary, it crosses genres into fiction and comedy. The world famous violinist with a nose fetish, Julian Rachlin, takes over the town of Dubrovnik, Croatia, every year to bring together some of the world's greatest musicians, actors and composers and create a unique two weeks long classical music festival. His oldest friend, the violinist, composer and "wanna-be" filmmaker Aleksey Lgudesman offers to make a documentary film that will take an "inside look" at this "fairytale" festival but things seem to go wrong from the start. Finding himself in the role of a somewhat oblivious producer, Rachlin watches the documentary fall apart in front of his eyes, as Lgudesman manages to offend every one of the artists he interviews. By the time John Malkovich starts ranting about how much Rachlin "sucks" and all classical musicians are depicted as "gay", Rachlin realizes that this is not quite what he expected. A mix between being boldly sincere and outright ridiculous, questions like "What does a conductor actually do?" and "Why does anyone come to a music festival in the first place?" fail to be answered in the most eloquent way. In the end, Aleksey Lgudesman makes Sir Roger Moore cry on camera and Julian Rachlin fear for his future, not only as a classical soloist...

On one hand, its exploitation contributes to the economic growth of the country, but on the other hand, the proliferation of small illegal exploitations generates conflicts and an environmental, social and human disaster. Is there just too much control today? Monitoring, databases, mandatory data collection, cameras and more every day? Can the individual even hope to influence this process? Can the average citizen still actively influence his surroundings? Or is he nothing more than a figure a unit, taxpayer, user, number? How far can or rather, must an individual, an artist, go in order to learn the true state of things? In an era obsessed with identification, the art group Ztohoven undertook an experiment in order to see how much could be done with your own and with a borrowed identity. The group’s members ordered official ID cards using fake identities, trading identities by using passport photos created by morphing their faces together. Using their new identities, they then got married, travelled abroad, voted, and generally showed how difficult it is for the system to tell us apart.

Run Time: 119'
Language: French, English, Spanish
Director(s): Ramuntcho Matta
Producer(s): GFILMS
Delivery Status: Completed
Year: 2011
Countries of Origin: Chile

INTIMATTA is a cinematographic object, typical from MATTA’s sphere, belonging to his world and nothing else, open to whatever you want to project in it. It is not a documentary but more an artist film about Roberto Matta, based on video recordings made by his son Ramuntcho Matta, director of this project, and about interviews to contemporaries who knew Matta very well. When he was 80, Matta felt the need to transmit the keys of his career and thus created an exchanging space between him and his youngest son, Ramuntcho, who was young enough to be his grandson. An even closer relationship was built, since Matta had lost two of his children: Batan, who committed suicide in 1975 and his twin brother, Gordon Matta-Clark, who died of cancer in 1978. This way, Ramuntcho started to record from the eighties each encounter with his father, focused on how to transmit the tools for you to become your own father. Transmission was always the centre of Matta’s philosophy. This is what allowed him to develop very privileged relationships with, among others, Garcia Lorca, Le Corbusier, Victor Brauner, Salvador Dali, André Breton, Marcel Duchamp... in order to be able to transmit later on these knowledge, a real principle of life and responsibility to Matta: instead of hiding the secrets of creation, he opens his studio to other artists, creating a real “inspiring” breeze to Jackson Pollock, Willhem de Kooning, Fahlström, Jörn… Thanks to dozens of tapes with Roberto Matta painting, talking, walking and even sleeping; recorded between 1986 and 2000, through his working notebooks, his letters, his postcards and the gifts he sent to family and friends, INTIMATTA shows us a way of thinking. With this unpublished material as a starting point , INITIMATTA immerses us into the artist’s creative and intimate world, stating some universal questions about transmission, fatherhood, and how to share intimacy.

THE BATTLE OF ALEPPO (CHRONICLES OF THE SYRIAN REVOLUTION)

In response to the Arab Spring the Syrian people started demanding the downfall of the regime and the creation of democratic institutions in March 2011. The government responded to these protests with repression and violence, all the while promising reform. Yet on May 7th 2012 elections took place without the participation of any of the opposition groups who had been uniformly branded 'terrorists'. In the weeks following the vote, Syria's towns and villages rose up, as one, against the regime. The revolution had started. In July 2012 the newly-formed Free Syrian Army launched an offensive on two key fronts: the capital Damascus, to the south, and Syria's economic power-house, Aleppo, in the north. Shot in August 2012 in the heat of the battle, this documentary reveals the suffering of a people struggling, alone, against the war machine of one the most barbaric dictatorships still in existence. It captures, in close-up, the shelling of civilians and the field hospitals in which they are treated; the refugees abandoned by the international community; and the front lines where lightly-armed freedom fighters clash with the regime's arsenal of fighter planes and tanks. In order to carry out this exceptional piece of investigative journalism the filmmakers risked their lives to enter Aleppo and live night and day alongside its residents under constant bombardment. In making this film Pierre Piccinin da Prata and Eduardo Ramos Chalen desired, above all else, to focus the public's attention on the anguished cries of a people dying while an indifferent world looks on.

Yearly precipitation here reaches a record-breaking 10 meters. Once, after some huge eruption, the surface of the volcano Piton des Neiges collapsed and slumped one kilometer into its empty interior, leaving behind just vertical walls covered with the most vigorous vegetation one can imagine. The monumentality of the place is emphasized by five huge waterfalls which vanish somewhere deep in the cracks at the bottom of a gigantic drop. This unusual natural marvel can only be seen from a helicopter, provided that one is lucky and the tropical clouds clear away. But there's also another option.........

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) is one of the masterminds of the modern age and the visionary of an ecological energy concept for the 21st century. His influence until today is gigantic! Tesla invented AC (Alternating Current) and he presented the transmission of electromagnetic waves for the first time; today we call it: radio. His “worldwidewireless system” anticipated Internet. The film is based on the book “All About Tesla”. It tells the story of his life and analyses his impact on the development of our modern world. Tesla’s life story is told as a fascinating mix of ingenious inventiveness and narcissistic hubris against the background of the emerging modern world. His life is like a thriller about science, money and power. “If we use fuel to get our power, we are living on our capital and exhausting it rapidly. This method is barbarous and wantonly wasteful and will have to be stopped in the interest of coming generations.” Nikola Tesla, 1900. “He’s a role model for all of us. He was a great genius and he envisioned entire systems and they got put together and they worked.”David L. Goodstein, Professor of Applied Physics, California Institute of Technology.

The Mursi tribe lives in the basin of the Omo River in the Southeast of the African state of Ethiopia. The women are known for placing large plates in their lower lips and wearing enormous, richly decorated earrings. Every year hundreds of Western tourists come to see the unusually adorned natives; posing for camera-toting visitors has become the main source of income for the Mursi. To make more money, they embellish their "costumes" and finery in such a manner that less of their original authentic culture remains. The film contrasts the views of Mursi women and those of Dutch tourists preparing for a meeting. This humorous and at the same time chilling film shows the destructive impact tourism has on traditional communities.

Genre: Music & Arts
Run Time: 52'
Language: English
Director(s): Jeffrey Perkins
Producer(s): Body and Soul Productions
Delivery Status: None
Year: 2011

Forty years in the making, « The Painter Sam Francis » is artist Jeffrey Perkins’ lyrical and intimate portrait of a friend, mentor, and leading light of American abstract art. The film retraces Francis’ life and career from his childhood in California to his artistic maturation in post-war Paris, his time spent in Japan, and his return to the United States. Hinging on an interview that Perkins conducted with Francis in 1973, as well as extended scenes of the artist at work in the studio, the film provides deep insight into a man for whom creativity was a powerful life-sustaining force. Interviews with friends, family, and fellow artists - including Ed Ruscha, James Turrell, Bruce Conner, Alfred Leslie, and others - illuminate a mysterious and complex personality, and its reflection in a body of work that is simultaneously diverse and singular. For Francis, art was a path to transcendence; for Perkins, Francis was art. « The Painter Sam Francis » is a labor of love, a moving portrait of a man, and a tribute to the power of art.
